Talent is EverywhereOpportunity is Not

Jordan and Niki learned this growing up in Australia and Alaska, places where they saw people with extraordinary gifts settle for less, not because of a lack of talent, but because of a lack of opportunity, access and sometimes encouragement.

They have built Mailata Family Foundation in response, an organization that aims to close the gap by providing scholarships to talented, hard-working, young people in Philadelphia and beyond.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Jordan Mailata’s path to the NFL began without a roadmap. Growing up in Australia, he had never played American football until he was identified through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program.

With a brief window to prove himself, he trained relentlessly, balancing long days of physical work with the challenge of learning an entirely new sport. What followed was an unlikely rise from a seventh-round draft pick to a Super Bowl champion, built on discipline, resilience, and determination to seize an opportunity.

Niki Ikahihifo-Bender Mailata’s journey required a different kind of courage. Raised in Anchorage, Alaska, she left home as a teenager to pursue academic opportunities far from what she had known.

From Virginia to New York City, she navigated unfamiliar environments in pursuit of her goals, eventually attending NYU and later Duke University School of Law, before becoming a lawyer at a leading national firm. Her path, too, was shaped by the pursuit of opportunity and the determination to step into it.

MFF Founders

Though they grew up thousands of miles apart, Jordan and Niki share a common understanding: talent is everywhere, but opportunity does not.

Both know how much can change when someone is given a chance; and how much potential can go unrealized without one.

Mailata Family Foundation is built on this belief. It exists to create opportunity for young people who are ready to pursue their goals, but need support to get there, and to ensure that those opportunities don’t stop with one person, but carry forward into the communities they come from.

Passion Ventures + Scholarships

What are a Passion Venture?

A passion venture is a path a young person has chosen for themselves, something they are committed to pursuing, whether in sports, the arts, STEM, or beyond. It’s more than an interest. It’s a goal they are actively working toward, but need support to fully realize.

Mailata Family Foundation identifies driven, intentional young people who know what they want to pursue but need support to get there. Through scholarships and access to additional resources, we help turn their goals into real, achievable pathways. Our work prioritizes both economic need and communities where pursuing an unconventional path can be difficult, with support, resources, or encouragement often limited.

Because often, the difference between one person and another comes down to whether someone gave them a chance.

MFF is building more than individual success stories. We are creating a network of young people who carry their opportunities forward, forming a cycle of mentorship, support, and possibility that extends far beyond a single recipient. By bringing together donors who understand the power of being given a chance, we help ensure that opportunity continues to reach the next generation.
